In _Sappho: a Garland_ the fragments are run together with a gap or space indicating where one fragment ends and another begins.

This leads one to believe that Sappho's work was one long, continuous poem that has been destoryed in places, while others remain in tact/5(5). Sappho is a great poet, and I enjoyed this book a lot. As translated by Jim Powell, Sappho is a poet who speaks directly to modern sensibilities, which many other poets of the ancient world, however great their achievement, do not.[return][return]There is nothing a translator can do about the fact that so many of her poems are missing or incomplete, except make the best job of presenting what /5.

Much of Sappho's original poetry seems to have been lost; classic writers refer to many of her works that are no longer extant. The few works that survive are in fragmentary condition, often just a few words from the middle of a line. As short as this book is (65 pages), the translation is only half/5(3).

In history and poetry texts, she is sometimes associated with the city of Mytilene on Lesbos; she was also said to have been born in Eresos, another city on Lesbos/5.

These hundred poems and fragments constitute virtually all of Sappho that survives and effectively bring to life the woman whom the Greeks consider to be their greatest lyric poet.

Mary Barnard's translations are lean, incisive, direct--the best ever published. She has rendered the beloved poet's verses, long the bane of translators, more authentically than anyone else in English.

If you are interested in Hollywood lesbians of the 20ies and 30ies, The Sewing Circle is a fabulous wealth of information. There’s a strong resemblance with The Girls: Sappho Goes to Hollywood by Diana McLellan but as that was published init appears that she took a very ‘close look’ at The Sewing Circle for her source material/5.
